Tuesday 1939
“We need to go into hiding” my dad said as he paced the floor. “The people I work with told me we can hide in their secret annex.” “We need to pack TONIGHT and we need to make it look like we ran away! Go, go, go, start packing NOW!”
“Hi I’m Sam, I am 13 and I am Jewish, I am also living in Poland where the war has just started. The Germans are trying to take over Poland. The Nazis are everywhere! And I mean everywhere! I have just finished packing my bag to go, dad said we are leaving at five in the morning so I better get some sleep!”
Wednesday 1939
A voice woke me up. “Come on get up! Get up Sam!” I heard this as I heaved myself out of bed. “Why do we have to get up so early?” I quickly said as I pulled my top over my head. “Because we need to be up and at it before most of the Nazi’s get up. There will be some Nazi’s but not a lot. We need to make it look like we ran away to Switzerland, I’ve written a letter to the neighbors telling them we left!
Anyway we made it look like we ran away quickly. So this is what we did: We left clothes on the floor and half out of draws, we left the dirty plates on the table and broken plates on the ground. We also squirted toothpaste all around the bathroom! But it was also very sad we had to leave the house with its memories, and our cat milky licking a dirty plate with a little bit of milk on it!
“Why do the Germans hate Jewish people?” I asked my mom as we walked down the street. The people we are staying with took our bags already so we weren't carrying anything. “Because they think that we bring bad luck.” my mom said as we crossed the road. We were all silent as it was cold and we were wrapped in lots and lots of layers, but the real reason we were silent is because we passed a Nazi and he said this under his breath: “ Never too cold them Jews, he he.” We soon came to the tall building, it was at least 3 stories high. “Here we are.” my dad said as he knocked. It took awhile for them to come to the door, but eventually a woman with ginger hair came to answer the door. “Her name is Katrina.” my dad said as she invited us inside.
Katrina said “Hi”, then showed us where we will be staying. ”This is weird” I said to mom as we walked inside…
They led us through the first floor, up the second floor, then finally we came to a staircase. “What are we doing here?” I asked Katrina. “This is where you will be staying” she said as she slowly (and quite dramatically) opened the staircase as if it were a door…
DRAMATIC!
Yes I know so dramatic!
Okay, now back to the story.
When we got inside I thought “wow!” She showed us around and she told us we would be sharing it with our old neighbours. We all unpacked and in the attic was all the food mostly beans, lots of beans!
Saturday 1939
A door opened and Katrina was standing there saying that our new roommates were here. (talking about roommates, in the secret annex there are 3 bedrooms + the attic. 1st bedroom-mom and dad, 2nd bedroom-Dee and me, 3rd bedroom-James and Helen, attic-Lucas’s room (because he has his cat).
Anyway, when they walked in the door James said: ”Hey you wrote a letter saying that you fled to Switzerland! So why are you HERE?”. “Good, our plan worked then” my dad said.
Dad helped James, Mom helped Helen and I helped Lucas. Dee was just reading a book so we had to help our old neighbours unpack. James kept on saying “I can’t believe you guys are here, you made it look like you ran away and the note seemed so realistic!” Anyway dad said I have to get some sleep.
Sunday 1939
Okay so today Lucas’s cat died and it stinks! We have asked that Katrina take it but she doesn't want to and I don’t blame her. I wouldn't want to take a dead cat to a pet cemetery to bury it either!
Monday 1939
I was reading my book and dad came running into my bedroom when he whispered “Stay where you are!, I think someone tipped the Nazi’s off about the secret annex. The Nazi’s are looking at the bookcase and pulling lots of books out, they haven’t figured it out yet but they might. They don’t know if it's true or not so if you make any noise then they will know it’s true and they try everything! Okay?” “Okay.” I whispered. A few moments later slowly I heard the footsteps walk away from the bookcase and down the stairs, no one dared even breathe until we heard the door open, and then close again. “Pheww!!” Everyone said at last. But, we shouldn't have said that… “Aha!” cried one of the Nazis “We knew they were in here somewhere, Katrina told us. She joined the Nazi’s yesterday!” “Why Katrina, why?” I whispered to myself. ‘Just open the bookcase like a door.” she said in a smirk. When they found us here they took us for a walk. They told us that they were going to take us to a wall. As we walked I spotted the 7 Nazi’s were all carrying bayonnets, the ones with the really sharp tips…
We were led to this wall and they pushed us towards it. ”Face us!” they said, then, BOOM! All the Nazi’s turned around to face the explosion behind them. That's when I decided to run everyone else's eyes were all fixed to the explosion, I didn’t dare yell to them in case one of the Nazi’s heard so I made a run for it I ran and ran and ran, I didn’t look back, not even once. Then I heard this: wizz, wizz, wizz, then silence. The last thing I heard before I burst into tears were bodies falling to the ground.
So I ran and ran crying too. I didn’t know where I was going but I didn't care. I ran on the road and down the street I never stopped until finally I was out of breath. I collapsed onto the concrete. I was sure I was in another town. I sat up and looked around to see where I was. I didn’t recognize where I was so I sat on the grass on the side of the path and cried some more. Then something unbelievable happened and a lady came up to me and said “Are you okay?” “um, not really, my dad, mom, and sister all got killed by the Nazi’s!” I said through sobs. “How old are you?” she said. “I’m 13” I said “I ran all the way from Stargard!” “Wow, you're now in Kolobrzeg!” “Wow!” I said “that's a long way!”
I lived a happy life because Josephine/the kind lady took me in as her own and even when the Nazi’s came to invade Kolobrzeg Josephine had already changed my name, changed my birthday and got me a license to say that I wasn't Jewish. I owe my life to her.
