The name of the story is Bok Choy and the author is Paul Mason. This story is about a chinaman who no one likes, but in the end people realize how kind he is.
Ah Sum delivers vegetables around for people to buy. The only person that buys from him is Mother. William and Jacob talk about Ah Sum behind his back and saying that they don’t like the “chinese cabbages”. When Jacob goes fishing in the river he slips. He is knocked out cold. When he wakes up he is in Ah Sum’s little cottage. After that Jacob is really nice to Ah Sum and he even tries some bok choy.
Mrs. Bishop is my character that I have chosen.
Her point of view hasn't changed over the story. She hasn't changed because she is just a mean woman who only cares for herself. She doesn’t like Ah Sum and she doesn't like chinamen either. She thinks they are weird people who don’t deserve to live. She said ‘well look what the cat dragged in.’ and mother said ‘he was rescued by the vegetable man, would you believe.’ and Mrs. Bishop said was he indeed? You'll be wanting to watch out, the chinaman will be after something.’. Mrs. Bishop also said that ‘he’d probably sell his own mother for a ha’penny, given the chance.’
The big message is that don’t be mean to other people that are a different culture and don’t think that they are much different from you. Be kind and carry on. I know this because in this story people are mean to Ah Sum because he is a different culture. Mother is the only one that is nice to him and in the end Jacob is too.
I like this story and I agree that you can’t be mean just because someone is a different culture. I think that Jacob did the right thing by liking him in the end. I think that people need to be nicer. Just because they are a different culture doesn’t mean you can be rude.
