AMP Show Driftwood Creation

For the AMP show, I decided to make a driftwood hanger.

The hanger has 2 nails for keys to go and has the word beach out of shells.

Here is the picture - hope you like it!

Here are the steps that you can follow if you want to make a hanger as well:

What you need:

A long piece of driftwood
Lots of different sized shells - spiral shells
Nails - as many as you want to have on each side
String : 30 - 40cm
Hammer
Hot glue gun

Step 1.    Hammer the nails into the sides of the piece of driftwood
2.    Glue the shells together with the hot glue gun, to make the letters of a word (Mine was 'Beach')
3.    Stick the word evenly onto the piece of driftwood with hot glue
4.    Stick the string onto the driftwood with hot glue, let it dry and then your hanger will be ready for use!

Fires

FIRES

In a fire all you need to focus on, is getting yourself out safely and quickly.

This is a picture of a fire triangle. A fire triangle is the main sources of a fire.
Eg. If I put a fire blanket on a fire that would cut out the oxygen and so the fire would die.

If you can, when you get out of the house or building that you are in, close the door so the oxygen can't get in and hopefully won't make the fire bigger, also if you have enough time then you can shut all the windows.

A wood house will burn faster than a brick house because wood is more flammable than brick. Wood is the fuel of the fire.
How a fire extinguisher works: the fire extinguisher puts a blanket of foam or powder on the fire so that it cuts out the oxygen. Another way a fire extinguisher works is when it has water in it. The water will cut out the heat and so the fire will die.

Here is something you need to know: NEVER put water on an electrical fire, you will electrocute yourself.

Do you know what a fire door is? Well a fire door is a door that when you close, it will trap the fire in the room, and it won't burn down (for a while at least) so you can get out safer.

If you are trying to get out when your door is closed, and the door nob is hot... DON'T open the door, there will be a fire on the other side. Try climbing out your window.

Another thing to remember is if there is a lot of smoke, crawl under the smoke. DON'T stand up in the smoke, the smoke will get to your lungs and you can collapse and possibly die.

Be careful on hot days (and non hot days) with cigarettes', matches, flames and other hot things.

Minecraft Mystery Box Challenge - Build a Theme Park Ride in 220 minutes!

I worked with Greta for the Minecraft Mystery box challenge. Our challenge was to make a theme park ride. On our ride there is a lava pit that you go overtop, water that you go through, a library that you go through, you go underground, and you also go through a haunted house. There is a separate ride also and it is basically underground the whole way. By the rides there is a  ticket booth where you get your ticket for the cool rides! Making the part where you go through the water was probably the hardest part. I had to start again at one point! Greta and I are happy with our build and I hope you are too! :)

Every second Tuesday the R.I.S.E. team come to Tane-Mahuta (my studio), this term my kaiawhina has been with Caroline. While Caroline is in our studio she teaches us art. During some of the weeks we have done perspective drawing (which is 3D art), we have done some free draw, and one of my favorites is she says something like draw 3 lines across the page then draw 4 circles e.t.c.

Here is a photo of my drawing of perspective drawing:

Rocket

Rocket

Rocket is a very quick-growing crop that is commonly used as a salad ingredient or blended into egg and cheese dishes. Rocket has a distinctive sharp, peppery flavor and is ready in a matter of weeks from planting.

Ideal in pots and containers, it is also very easy to grow, making it ideal for beginner gardeners.

When to plant the seeds:
The time that you can grow rockets from a seed (in Canterbury) is February, March, August, September, October and November.

What to put with the seed:
The better the soil, the better your plants will grow. If you are starting with an existing garden bed, dig in organic matter like sheep pellets and compost to your soil. Then you can add a layer of vegetable mix. If planting in pots and containers, fill with vegetable mix.

How to plant:
Before you plant rocket seeds, dig in some fine compost and a little fertilizer to prepare soil as evenly as possible. Cover lightly with seed raising mix (available in bags), then press down and keep soil moist. Planting seeds every few weeks will ensure you have a continuous supply.

Watering:
Water the rocket thoroughly every 2-3 days during dry spells and they will be OK.

Where do you plant them?
place them in direct sunlight during the morning only on the first day, then increasing their time outside by a few hours each day until they are strong enough to be transplanted outside.

How long will it take to sprout?
You can harvest them in just 6-7 weeks! It's so quick to grow and will be easy and fun!

How long until I can eat it?
The degree of 'pepperiness' of the leaves depends on their age, so start harvest early when the leaves are small, just 7-10cm. These can be cut or whole plants pulled for the salad bowl. The flowering stem should be removed as soon as it appears, as the leaves will quickly become hot and strong.

What is the lowest temperature that a rocket plant can live in?
The lowest temperature that a rocket can live in is 0°C. If it is lower than 0°C then your rocket will probably die.

My Book Review

The book I chose to do my book review is a non fiction book and I recommend it for people who like true stories.
The book is called: My Survival, A Girl On Schindler's List.
It is a memoir by Rena Finder with Joshua M. Greene.

The book is about the world war 2 with the Nazis invading Krakow (Rena's home) and other countries. Rena and her family are kicked out of their home to live in the ghetto and get moved to different death camps. In the end they survive but a important member of the family died, Rena's father. :(

Oskar Schindler was an amazing person who saved many lives, but sadly he lost his battle with the Cardiovascular disease and died the 9th of  October 1974.

Here is a picture of the book:

The Moon

The moon is an amazing planet. It gives us light when it’s dark, it saves us from meteors and lots more. Read this and find out lots of facts about the moon!

How far away? The moon is 380,000 kilometers from earth.
Is the sun or the moon closer to the earth? The moon is 400 times closer to earth than the sun.
Why can you jump so high on the moon? Because the moon is small its gravity is weak, and that's why you can bounce.
How come you can see astronauts’ footprints when you go to the moon? The moon has no air so there will be no wind to blow the footprints away. The footprints will probably stay there for millions of years.
How is the moon bright? The moon reflects light off the sun.

Some other facts:
The moon makes tides, High and low tides are caused by the Moon. The Moon's gravitational pull generates something called the tidal force. The tidal force causes Earth—and its water—to bulge out on the side closest to the Moon and the side farthest from the Moon. These bulges of water are high tides.

The moon is leaving us!
The moon is moving away from the earth about 4 centimeters a year! In a few billion years the moon will just look like another bright star in the sky. Enjoy it while you can!

Inquiry Writing Term 3

I have 2 favorite seasons because I cannot choose what season is my favorite.

Here are my favorite seasons: Spring and Autumn.

Spring:
I love Spring because that's the time when it’s not too hot and not too cold, but it’s still warmer than Autumn. Spring is probably the best time for camping, it’s not too cold but you still have coolness. You can still go for outdoor swimming, play outside, climb trees, and the weather is beautiful! And this is the season that daffodils might bloom in Early Spring! But most of all my Spring is one of my favorite seasons because that’s when all the baby animals are born! Did I mention that I LOVE animals?! Especially baby animals! Yay! I can’t wait till Spring!

Autumn:
I love Autumn because all the leaves change to different colours! Autumn is the BEST time to take photos, (I bet it’s the favorite season for photographers!) you can also: climb trees, make really cool art, play outside. Oh, and it's the time to plant daffodils! When you plant the daffodils they will bloom in late winter or early spring!

I only made a drawing for Autumn because I only had time for one:

The Great Rawhiti Bake Off

Banoffee Filled Donuts

Me making the doughnuts. The doughnuts took 2 days to make.

The doughnuts when they were rising

  Yum yum, doughnuts!

Finished!

🍩 DOUGHNUTS! 🍩
Today we are going to make Banoffee filled doughnut! For the doughnuts you will need: Dough: 35g milk 35g water 1 & 1/3 cups flour 45 g caster sugar 15 g yeast 2 eggs 1 tsp salt 75 g butter 1 tsp cinnamon Pinch nutmeg Pinch mixed spice Cinnamon sugar: 180 g sugar 2 tsp cinnamon Butterscotch sauce: 200 g brown sugar 50 g butter 120 ml cream Filling: 3 Bananas Chocolate 200 g Cream 300 ml whipped

For your dough: Place all of your ingredients into your mixing bowl with your wooden spoon and mix for about 7-10 minutes on a slow speed until your dough starts pealing away from the sides of the bowl and climbs up your spoon. If you don,t have a mixing bowl kneed by hand for 10 minutes.
We found this recipe on Facebook from a bakery called 'Glamour cake'. This recipe will make you 8 donuts and are to be eaten the same day. Fresh is best. d Oil the base and sides of another bowl and remove your dough into this and let it fridge over night, sealed. Pre heat your oven to 200 fan bake to step in as a prover for your donuts.

Leave it to heat for about 12 minutes then turn the oven off and use the heat inside to prove your donuts. This cuts the proving time down by about 45 minutes. They should only take 20 minutes to prove or until the dough has doubled in size.

In the AM take your dough out and tip it out on the bench, knocking the air out of it by pressing down and folding over. You will only be able to do this about three to four times as your dough will be tough and cold. Put back in the bowl and let rest for a further hour. Roll your dough out to about 4 cm thick and with a cup from your pantry tip upside down and use as a cutter for your doughnuts.
It will take about 8 - 10 minutes to come to temperature then you can start frying.

This is the most important part of this recipe process is getting your dough nice and puffy before you fry them off. Other wise you end up with a dense dough and not the nicest eating texture. So make sure they are nice and fluffy before frying. Just before your dough is ready to come out of the oven, set up your frying oil. In a pan pour in 1 L - 1.5 L of oil depending on how big your fry pan is and set on a medium low heat. On my kitchen oven I had it set in between 2 and 6 heat. 3 minutes each side.
In another bowl melt down your 200 g of chocolate and make yourself a piping bag.

The reason we have the oil on a lower heat is to prevent the donuts from scorching on the outside and not baking in the middle. So make sure your oil is low to medium heat. If its smoking your oil is to hot. Sugar and cool your donuts on paper towels to absorb any left over fat. Once your donuts are completely cooled we can decorate. Make your butterscotch sauce first. In a pot bring to the boil your brown sugar and butter. Once your sugar has dissolved add your cream and continue to stir for 2 to 4 minutes until thickened. In a separate mixing bowl whip your 300 ml of cream to soft Peaks. There is a tutorial on how to make this at: @breeglamourcake

The doughnuts were amazing and I would recommend it for YOU to make.
Cut all of your doughnuts in half leaving them hinged together at the ends so they're still connected. Slice up your three bananas and place on the base of your doughnuts. Drizzle your butterscotch sauce on top of your bananas and then top with cream. Close the lids of your donuts and drizzle on top your melted chocolate with your piping bag and more butterscotch sauce. Any leftover melted chocolate spread on a piece of grease proof paper, put in the fridge at allow it to set. Once set, snap the chocolate sheet into shards and placed on top of the doughnut for extra decoration.

Now its time to get plate, knife and a fork and dig in.

Micro:Bit controllers...

Elizabeth has been teaching us about micro:bits. A micro:bit is a little pocket sized computer. They communicate through a computer. To move information from the computer to the micro:bit you have to download and drag. That was the hardest part. I learnt lots of things like how to make a flashing heart on the computer and transporting it to the micro:bit. Some other things that we made were a smiley face, sad face, shapes and we even managed to make our name! We could do all this because the micro:bit has 25 small LED lights on the top of the micro:bit. Micro:bits are fun to play with and there are many things that you can do. You could spend hours with it and would still have more things that you can do!

Christmas In China

Christmas Traditions in China. The small number of Christians in China call Christmas Sheng Dan Jieh, which means Holy Birth Festival. They decorate their homes with evergreens, posters, and bright coloured paper chains. Not many people sing carols on the streets, though it's popular in Christian's houses, where the karaoke machine is, the karaoke machine is very popular in China. Gifts are not given much in China apart from in the expats. Many Christmas foods are difficult to find in China: Brussels sprouts, Christmas puddings, even turkeys. But internet shopping can be a way to get Christmas food home quicker. Santa's in China are the same as the ones in NZ but they have a one piece red suit with no white. They have the same hat but the boots are red as well.

They seem to have a liking for red!

My story of Joe and his family escaping from the fire:

This story is told by Joe:

2 in the morning...
Beep, beep, beep, beep, beep, beep, beep, beep, beep, beep.
“The fire alarm!!!” shouts dad.
“Get out, get out!” he screams over the beeping.
I was still sleeping. Dad had to come get me and wake me up. He looked outside, the fire was huge. “We have a few minutes to pack a few things, it's big but it's still a while away.” I packed the most important things: My alpaca Albert, my alpaca’s toys, some warm clothes, my pillow, and a few other things. We quickly attached the trailer and put Albert on it, we made it comfy and put some hay in there. The street lights were on but it was still hard to see. I tried to go to sleep but I couldn’t sleep. I had to keep looking back at Albert to make sure he was alright. He seemed to be Ok, he was just lying down probably asleep.

About an hour and a half later...
We finally found a hotel, it took us an hour to get out of the valley because the traffic was everywhere, and half an hour to find a hotel, they were all booked because it's a big fire! So it was 4 am when we finally got to go to sleep.

The next day at 9:30 am...
We got up so late! I usually get up at 5:45, not 9:30! Anyway I think everyone is gonna have the day off because of what happened last night.

Later in the afternoon...
The news:
“Breaking news, we are here to say that the fire at Nelson is still going since 1:45 am, the fire trucks got there at 2:30 because of traffic. The fire has burnt down lots of homes but the firefighters have saved lots too.” “Some people say that they think the whole valley is going to burn to ashes!”

Back at work...
Luckily my dad works up here so he can still work. I also have a job at the rescue center but i haven't worked there for ages because of the fire. So I went back today after school and I am so happy!

Here is my day at work, this is also the story ‘After the fire’:

After the fire by Adrienne Frater:

Joe was first off the bus. He was meeting Mum at the rescue centre, and sheʼd worry if he was late. He began to run, though not fast because of his asthma. The air wasnʼt as smoky today, but the helicopters were still there, carting their big red buckets. Joe could see one in the distance, heading to the valleys. It was only two weeks since the fire, but it felt like the helicopters had been there forever. Mum was waiting at the gate. “Hi, love,” she said, giving Joe a kiss. She looked tired. “Theyʼre short of volunteers today. I might give a hand if you donʼt mind.” Joe nodded. He didnʼt mind. He took the two apples his mum held up. “Thanks,” he said. “You remembered.” Mum smiled. “Of course I did. One for you, one for Albert.” They arranged to meet in an hour, and Joe started for the stables on the far side of the showgrounds. He liked walking past the goats and chickens and turkeys. Their pens were nearly full, with animals still arriving each day. No wonder they needed more volunteers. The stable was full, too. Albert was the only alpaca. He was in a stall next to a grey pony named Puffin. Joe stroked his petʼs coffeecoloured coat and began to talk quietly. “Mum got you an apple,” he said. “She couldnʼt come. Sheʼs helping out today.” “Hey, Joe.” It was Sadia, the girl who rode Puffin. “My mum is helping, too. Iʼm here for a while. Do you want to take Albert for a walk?” Joe nodded shyly. Heʼd always been the quiet one. At his new school, he hadnʼt made any real friends yet. Sadia was older – she went to intermediate – but theyʼd both been evacuated at the same time, and they both loved animals. Plus it helped that she liked to talk. “Take this,” she said, handing Joe a red halter. “It was Puffinʼs, but Iʼm sure it will fit Albert.” They walked the pony and alpaca to the centre of the showgrounds, where the sheep were grazing. Albert stopped to eat some hay. Most of the feed had been donated. The grass at the showgrounds, like the grass everywhere, was long gone. The drought had seen to that. After the grass, the trees had started dying, which had seemed a terrible thing … until the fires started. “You look sad,” said Sadia. “What are you thinking about?” “Mumʼs orchard,” Joe said. “We planted it last autumn. Itʼs probably gone.” Sadia frowned. “The year before my family left Bangladesh, it was a bad rainy season. There were floods, and my grandparentsʼ village was washed away. They lost everything – but they survived. Thatʼs all that matters, yes?” Joe nodded. What could he say? When Dad came to pick them up, he was smiling. “I have good news. We can go home tomorrow.” “Albert too?” Joe asked. “Maybe not. Weʼll have to see what things are like. Besides, thereʼs no grass.” “There was no grass before the fire,” Joe pointed out. “We can buy hay.” “Donʼt rush us, Joe,” Mum said gently. “Albert will be fine for a few more days.” Joe had trouble sleeping that night. Their unit at the motel was hot and stuffy, and each time he fell asleep, he dreamt about fire – everything burning. He was grateful to the firefighters who had saved their house, but what hadnʼt been saved? The next morning, they packed their few things and drove home. Joe peered out the window, mapping the damage. Their valley had been hard hit. Most of the pine forest was gone, replaced by scorched hills covered in grey ash like snow. In the few places that were still green, wide strips had been bulldozed to form a containment line – one more ugly thing spoiling the view. “Itʼll take a while to stop burning,” Dad said, nodding towards a large dark patch where the forest still smoked. “Donʼt worry. They wouldnʼt let us back if it wasnʼt safe.” The neighboursʼ houses were still there. A few farm buildings were singed, some big trees on the flat were gone, and – strangest of all – there were no animals. The three white goats at the Haguesʼ place were gone. So was their miniature pony. There were no sheep, no cows, not even birds – anywhere. “Mum,” Joe said. “Sadia told me a story.” “Sadia?” “My friend at the rescue centre.” He liked saying the word friend. “She told me about her grandparents and the big floods they had in Bangladesh.” Mum listened and then asked about Sadia. It felt good to have something to talk about, but as they approached their corner, he saw her shoulders tense up. “Can I walk from here?” he asked. Outside, the acrid smell of smoke was overpowering, and Joe had to use his inhaler. He walked down the drive, taking it all in. The cabbage trees Dad had planted still stood in their two neat rows, unhappy but alive. The shade trees behind them were harder hit. Most were skeletons. And Mumʼs orchard was gone. Joe had helped plant those trees: apples, peaches, apricots. Before the drought got really bad – and before the water ban – heʼd been in charge of watering. Heʼd never stopped hoping that somehow the orchard had survived. Mum was in the far corner, sitting at the picnic table. It was a beautiful spot, with a view down to the stream and willow trees, but now it was desolate, everything but the table gone. Joe couldnʼt understand how it had survived. “Iʼm really sorry, Mum,” he said. He stood, waiting. Eventually, she spoke. “Well, at least we still have a fence around Albertʼs paddock.” This was true. Like the picnic table, the fence hadnʼt been touched. The fire made no sense at all. “Weʼll pick him up tomorrow,” Mum added. Joe smiled. He was impatient for Albert to come home, but that didnʼt help his mum. “Itʼs OK,” she said, seeing the guilty look on his face. “Weʼre here. Thatʼs all that matters, like your friend Sadia said.” 6 illustrations by Adele Jackson Joe nodded. His mum was right. Sadia was right. “We can plant your fruit trees again,” he said. “We can.” Joe sat with his mum and studied where the orchard had been. What should they do differently this time? What would work better? This was a chance to try something new. Already, he had some ideas.

Have you read it yet?

The story I will tell my children about lockdown

When I was younger…
I was about 10 years old, the streets were a ghost town, everyone was
locked up In their house because of this virus called: coronavirus or
another name for it is Covid-19. I was in my bubble with 4 other people
my Dad (Phil or Philip), my Mum (Rose or Rosalie), my Sister Teri and
Ashleigh. The things that I really enjoyed was going on lots of walks and
rides, also doing lego, art and a lot more. Some other things that I did
during lockdown are: pick apples from our tree and from the red-zone,
school work, helping my little sisters with their school work, and I can’t think
of anymore. Sometimes I felt scared but safe, because I knew that we
were not going to get covid-19. We were in lockdown for 2 months before
it was level 2 and we could go to school again. The questions that I still
have are: Like other countries is the people that have already had it and
recovered is it going to flare back up again? I really wish I knew the answer.
If we went into lockdown again I think I wouldn’t do anything else different
than what I did during my time in lockdown. What I learnt during lockdown
was some new words that mum and dad probably didn’t know at my age:
social distancing, pandemic, coronavirus, and a lot more. Sometimes my
sisters were very annoying but sometimes we were fine. The places that
we slept in are: The playhouse, the tent, the lounge and Teri and Ash’s
room, (Teri also slept in my bedroom on the spare mattress).

And that was my story of the lockdown.

The Titanic

The Titanic

People thought the Titanic was unsinkable but then it hit an iceberg in the Atlantic ocean and sank.
The Titanic came from England and was heading to America but hit an iceberg outside New York.
It left on April the 10th sinking on the 15th of April 5 days after leaving.
Only 340 bodies were found after the sinking of the ship.
1,500 people died on the ship, about 1,160 bodies remain lost.
2,435 people boarded the Titanic, 705 people survived and 6 people were saved from the water.
All of the boots from the people are still scattered all over the ship. If you have a look today the boots will still be there.
It is not possible to raise the Titanic because it is 12,500 feet deep in the water.
The titanic is in two pieces and is really broken.
It was 4,000km from New York in America when it sank.
There were 107 children on the Titanic and 50 children died, which means 57 children survived.
It took 2 hours and 40 minutes to sink.
Out of a dozen (12) dogs only 3 very small dogs got let onto a lifeboat and survived. The dogs that were saved were 1 Pekinese and 2 Pomeranians.
Dogs, cats, chickens, other birds and rats (not the pet kind) were on the Titanic.
The Titanic is the biggest ship to ever sink. The captain of the ship is called Captain Edward J. Smith.
Captain Smith ignored seven iceberg warnings from his crew and other ships. If he had called for the ship to slow down then maybe the Titanic disaster would not have happened. It cost $7.5 million to build the Titanic and then it just sunk to the bottom of the ocean, so that's just a waste of money.
108 years ago (in 1912) the Titanic sunk.
There were many lifeboats that were half filled and could have had more people in it, there were 20 lifeboats but they only had time to release 18. 2 lifeboats went down with the ship. Even if they had more lifeboats they wouldn’t have had time to launch them all.
At 2:20 am was the time that the Titanic sank.

Anyway this is the end of my Titanic story/document. Thank you very much for reading this and thank you for reading this, and this, and this and you can go now.

But before you go this story/document is REAL! It is not fake, it is NOT FAKE!!!!!!!
