Rumbustification day Friday

On Rumbustification day there were many things to do, you could watch the talent show, you could play badminton, you could sing karaoke, you could ride on the crazy bikes, you could make a card for someone special, you could play table tennis, you could join in a water fight, you could go swimming, you could jump on the big mats in Tangaroa. There were many things that you could do, there was a photo shoot even.

At the start of the day Camryn, Greta, Maea and I all went surfing in the high tide of the ocean. The surf was a bit choppy, but the surfing was still fun. At the end Mr. Redmond bought us all a long lolly snake from the coffee shed. After surfing, most of our friend group took a photo in the photo booth, which was in Tawhirimatea.

Camryn, Jessica and I tried to do as many of the activities as we could. We made Christmas cards in Rongomatane, we held the cute guinea pigs in Papatuanuku (did you know that Peanut the guinea pig died so they got a baby one to keep oreo company, his name is Rusty), and we biked on the crazy bikes. We all fell off the bikes! 😂 We also listened to the karaoke in Tane-Mahuta (and no, we didn’t sing), and as I said the photo shoot in Tawhirimatea. In the hall I watched the talent show, and played some badminton. At the end of a great day Ava and I played some table tennis. Friday was an amazing day and I am really happy with what happened today and I have loved this year. It has been my most favourite year of school, and I have loved to end it with a great day!

Titanic, tragic history:

The Titanic

People thought the Titanic was unsinkable but then it hit an iceberg in the Atlantic ocean and sank.
The Titanic came from England and was heading to America but hit an iceberg outside New York.
It left on April the 10th sinking on the 15th of April 5 days after leaving.
Only 340 bodies were found after the sinking of the ship.
1,500 people died on the ship, about 1,160 bodies remain lost.
2,435 people boarded the Titanic, 705 people survived and 6 people were saved from the water.
All of the boots from the people are still scattered all over the ship. If you have a look today the boots will still be there.
It is not possible to raise the Titanic because it is 12,500 feet deep in the water.
The titanic is in two pieces and is really broken.
It was 4,000km from New York in America when it sank.
There were 107 children on the Titanic and 50 children died, which means 57 children survived.
It took 2 hours and 40 minutes to sink.
Out of a dozen (12) dogs only 3 very small dogs got let onto a lifeboat and survived. The dogs that were saved were 1 Pekinese and 2 Pomeranians.
Dogs, cats, chickens, other birds and rats (not the pet kind) were on the Titanic.
The Titanic is the biggest ship to ever sink. The captain of the ship is called Captain Edward J. Smith.
Captain Smith ignored seven iceberg warnings from his crew and other ships. If he had called for the ship to slow down then maybe the Titanic disaster would not have happened. It cost $7.5 million to build the Titanic and then it just sunk to the bottom of the ocean, so that's just a waste of money.
108 years ago (in 1912) the Titanic sunk.
There were many lifeboats that were half filled and could have had more people in it, there were 20 lifeboats but they only had time to release 18. 2 lifeboats went down with the ship. Even if they had more lifeboats they wouldn’t have had time to launch them all.

Other facts:
The titanic took 2 hours and 40 minutes to sink to the bottom of the North Atlantic Ocean
There were some really lucky people that didn't board on time and missed the boat.
At 11:40 PM the titanic hit an iceberg and at 2:20 AM the ship finally slipped from view

Worry worms

A worry worm is a crocheted worm that comes with a little message to tell you that if you are worried you can squeeze the worry worm and that will make your worries go away.

I have been making a worry worm to practice for the William Pike challange next year. My William Pike challenge will be based on crochet and worry worms.

Here is my progress on making a worry worm so far:

Blooket

Blooket is a new quiz game that our class has found out about, and we are using it to help us with our math. There are math quizes, but there are also other quizes about a lot of other things.

We have finished the experiment to see if Blooket is a good tool to use for math.

For this timestable test, (100 questions in 10 mins). This time I got 73/100 and my time was 4.55.

I got 3 questions wrong because I was rushing to try to improve my time.

I improved my goal with the time, but I also got questions wrong.

Overall I think that Blooket is a good tool to use to improve your math.

Map work

Camryn and I made a map for someone Brooke and Freya to follow, and they made a map for us to follow. I think that both groups did a good job of directing and following. The only annoying thing was the rain.

Blooket is a new quiz game that our class has found out about, and we are using it to help us with our math. There are math quizes, but there are also other quizes about a lot of other things.

We are doing an experiment to see if this site will improve our timestables.

For the experiment we did a timestable test, 100 questions in 10 mins. I got 100/100 and my time was 7.25.

In 3 weeks we will do another timestable test to see if we have improved. My goal to improve is to get a faster time.

Science update

- Science update -

What we have created so far:

For science my group (Brooke, Freya and I) are making a science newspaper of things that keep a astronaut mentally and physically healthy.

In the newspaper we have a front page, a page for the day in the life of an astronuat, the menu for the day, free time activities, jokes, keeping mentally healthy, and a did you know page.

 What problem are we solving?

The problem that we need to know is: How do astronauts keep healthy in space?

What science do we need to know?

We need to know how astronauts keep fit in space, what times do they eat, what do they eat, when do they go to bed, how do they go to sleep, how they have showers/brush their teeth/brush their hair, e.t.c

Camp Reflection

Camp Reflection

For camp we went to the Wainui YMCA campground. We arrived on Monday and we stayed for 2 nights. We then left on Wednesday.

Empathy:

I showed empathy when Greta hurt herself. I helped by staying with her and comforting her to make her feel better.

Imaginative:

I was imaginative when we were doing search and rescue. I imagined that we were on a real search and rescue and we had to be fast to find poor Bob.

Self-managing:

I was self-managing in my cabin. I kept my bed and suitcase tidy.

Belonging:

Belonging to a group during high ropes was helpful because I would'nt have been able to do the course without them. During high ropes you had to have a belayer, a backup belayer, and a rope manager.

Friday's work - Te wiki o te reo Maori

Alien Story

“Hello, this is Kelly on the news and we have some breaking news that will leave you speechless. Explorers have found a species that we believe is what we would call… an alien? Did I read that right? Um, yes it definitely says an alien. Um, ok, well, over to you Alex.”

“Yes I am with the explorers now and they are back from their dangerous expedition to find this strange creature. They said that they are going to study it, and see what it can do. This is Paul, the leader of the group, he will tell us about this creature that randomly turned up…”

“Yes hello. We have had a few reports out here from campers and trampers saying that they have heard strange noises in the middle of the night. So we came here to investigate… and we found that little guy.” says Paul as he pointed to the massive box that was being loaded onto a truck. “We can’t show you the creature now but maybe when we have studied it a bit more.”.

The box was wiggling and squirming. The creature wanted to come out, whatever it was. “Be careful with that box!” Yelled Paul. “Be careful! We can’t have it loose, it will destroy the town and cause chaos!”. “Sorry about that. As I was saying we believe it has crash landed on earth. We are trying to find its spaceship but so far we have had no luck. We will continue the search in the morning.” Thank you paul.” Alex said nervously. I hope you find out what this thing really is…”

The next night on the news:

“Welcome back, I will end the show with some really good news. We are happy to say that our country's football team has won the games for us! Everyone is so happy and celebrating so much that they  are having massive hangovers the next morning. Some are partying way into the night. Even us, the news, have balloons all over the studio. Oh we have some breaking news about the alien that we reported last night has now escaped, and gone into the night. Over to you Alex.”. “Yes, the alien I reported about last night has indeed escaped from its cage. We obviously underestimated this creature and what it can do. The truck it was on was heading to the lab just as normal. But when they went to take it out to do tests on, it was gone! And if you watched the news last night, Paul said that if it was loose it could destroy the whole town (and other towns) and cause complete chaos! I am zzz oh,zzz glitczzz ingzz out zz.”. “It looks like we are having some technical problems.” Said Kelly. “Well whatever that creature is, it is loose and it will destroy everything in its path. And that this is Kelly, on the news. Have a sleepless night everyone!”

That night:

A little boy was asleep in his bed, in his room, on the first floor of his house. He was dreaming about what he was going to have for breakfast the next morning, pancakes, his favourite, when suddenly… plonk, plonk, plonk. Someone was throwing stones at the window. The little boy woke up, and looked down at the creature that was on the ground throwing stones at the window. The boy opened the window, and pulled up the ‘thing’. “Do you want some food?” asked the boy. The weird ‘thing’ said something that the boy didn’t understand. The alien got some bread. The boy looked at the creature, he hadn’t taken any notice. The creature had pale skin, two arms and legs, and only two eyes. What was this creature…?

Tuesday's work - Te wiki o te reo Māori

Working out 2/3 of 15 and 2/3 of 21

 There is no sound.

E.G. What is 2/3 of 15

First you divide 3 and 15: 3 divided by 15 = 5

Then you divide 5 by the 2 (the one on top), to get 10

And the answer is 10!

Space Research

For the space research my buddies are Brooke and Freya.

I am interested in going to space. When I am older I would love to go to space.

A video that might be helpful is this video.

Our group thinks that we will make a daily newspaper and a diorama of a spaceship.

Leopard Seal

During lockdown my family and I all went to the beach for a walk to see the leopard seal that we had been told about. My sisters, Teri and Ashleigh, were excited to see the seal to see what it would do (the seal didn't do much, apart from rolling over). Previous people who had visited the seal had put tall and short sticks 3 meters around the leopard seal, so that people wouldn't go too close. The seal looked a bit sick, so my sister asked the seal if he was alright. He didn't answer. A day after we saw him he left for Sumner beach (so others could admire him of course). Here is a picture of the leopard seal on the beach:

Solar system

Today at science we learned about the solar system, about how the planets are spaced out and how big all the planets are. Did you know that the planets are WAY bigger than you think they are. Some, like jupiter, are massive compared to the earth. The bigger dots are the bigger planets, they are also known as gas giants. The smaller dots are the smaller planets.

Here is a picture of the planets spaced out:

(It is kind of hard to see)

And here is a picture of the size of the planets:

Here is a picture of the planets:

Hero's journey essay

I am comparing 2 stories to the hero’s journey.

The names of the stories I am comparing are La Luna and Uenuku and the mist maiden.

Please watch and read these, it will be easier to understand what I am comparing to.

The hero’s journey is a journey the main character/hero goes on to make the story become a story. You can’t have a story if there is no hero’s journey. In every story there has to be 4 things; a status quo - the normal life for the hero, a departure - where the hero leaves his/her normal life, a crisis point - where the hero is feeling like he/she is defeated and can't go on, and the return - where the main character/hero makes it back to their normal life.

In Uenuku and the mist maiden. Uenuku’s normal life/status quo is that he was hunting. Then his call of adventure is that he sees the mist maiden and it’s love at first sight. He was feeling excited, nervous, and mind blown when he saw the mist maiden.

In la luna, the problems the little boy faced were that his dad and grandad were telling him he had to use the tool they wanted him to use. But he didn’t want to use those tools.

The crisis point is that a huge star bigger than all the rest of the stars, came shooting down and landed on the moon.

How the little boy overcame the problem (in la luna); the little boy used a hammer to break it into a lot of little stars. His dad and grandad are surprised and happy for their little boy, and don’t pester him on what tool to use. His dad and grandad also stop arguing for once!

How this journey relates to me is when I ran 7km, in the run from broad park to spencer park challenge. My normal life is before the class gets told about the run, that is my status quo. Then my call to adventure is when we get told about the run, I then sign up. Then, my departure is that my mum takes some of my friends and I to Broad park to start our run. Our trials were that we got tired a few times but got back our energy by drinking some water. My crisis point was that I got exhausted when I was more than halfway there, maybe 5km in, and wanted to stop. But I kept on going with the help of my friends. My result was that I could keep running and finish. When we finished, we had a BBQ and hung out for the rest of the day. Then our return to the normal world was that my friends and I got driven by my mum back to school. Our new life/status quo is that we have completed the run and can now believe we can do (almost) anything.

If you ever find your call to adventure. Never saw no to it. You never know what might happen...

Brothers Grimm

The Brothers Grimm fairy tales are stories that are made more gruesome than the other fairy tales.

At the end of Snow white:

Then a pair of red hot iron shoes was brought into the room with tongs and set before her, and these she was forced to put on and to dance in them until she could dance no longer, but fell down dead, and that was the end of the wicked queen.

At the end of Rumpelstiltskin:

When soon afterwards the little man came in ans asked, "Now Mistress Queen, what is my name?" At first she said, "Is your name Conrad?"

"No."

"Is your name Harry?"

"No."

"Perhaps your name is Rumpelstiltskin?"

"The devil has told you that! The devil has told you that!" Cried the little man, and in his anger he plunged his right foot so deep into the earth that his whole leg went in; and then in rage he pulled at his left leg so hard with both hands that he tore himself in two.

How to tell if you can divide a number by 6

How to tell if you can divide a number by 6:

Rules:

  • You have to be able to divide it by 2

  • You have to be able to divide it by 3

  • It has to be an even number

2

3

6

468

This number (above) can be divided by 2 because it is an even number

To tell if it can be divided by 3 we need to break it up like this: 4+6+8=18 and can 18 be divided by 3: 18÷3=6 So yes it can be divided by 3

If it can be divided by 2 and 3 it can be divided by 6

So yes this number can be divided by 6!
